DONG GANG JHEN HAI KUNG

The settlements in Donggang were once divided into seven districts. For the purpose of religious ceremonies, they joined forces and formed the Seven Temple Districts: Lower Headland, Upper Headland, Xiazhong Street, Lunzaiding, Dingzhong Street, Anhai Street and Puzaijiao. Palanquin teams organized by the Seven Temple Districts are responsible for carrying Lord Heavenly Viceroy, Lord Wen, Holy Palanquin of the Middle Guards and the Artifacts of the Royal Boat. The Seven Headlands was a local organization during the immigration era of Donggang, and each Headland was centered round a local Temple. Palanquin teams are composed of volunteers, and the honorably position was passed down from father to son through many generations. Due to their charitable contributions, the Palanquin teams were allowed to enter the Temple Halls to receive the Deities. The Deities that were to be carried by specific Palanquin teams differ each year. Recently, a random draw was used, with the lots drawn 3 days before the Departure Ceremony. This process has since become a standard procedure.

Jhen Hai Kung is within the Temple District of Lunzaiding. It is currently one of the few Temple districts that join forces with neighboring Districts. This is due to the fact that Lunzaiding is unique in that it is centered round a single Temple. Through the connections between the District Temple and the Palanquin Team, in the Ceremony for Receiving the King, most volunteers would help with the hoisting the Lord’s Mount. Given that some Temples did not have their own Palanquin, an exclusive Palanquin for Lord Su, the Heavenly Viceroy of Seven Provinces, was constructed by the Palanquin teams with their ready source of volunteers.
